Juneteenth: College Closed June 19

Virginia Peninsula Community College’s campuses in Hampton and Williamsburg will be closed Monday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 20.

Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day and Independence Day, marks the abolition of slavery in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas declaring the end of the Civil War and slavery. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, some slave owners kept their slaves until this date, making Juneteenth a symbol of African American liberation.

During the closure, new and returning students may get information about fall semester classes, tuition, financial aid, and more at www.vpcc.edu.

The College offers various sessions within each semester including 16-week, 12-week and 8-week. Check out details here.
